Re-authorized under the ‘No Child Left Behind’ Act

     Our Focus:

  • Provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children attending low performing schools
  • Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities. Designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math.
  • Provide youth development activities
  • Drug and violence prevention programs
  • Technology education programs
  • Art, music and recreation programs
  • Counseling and character education.  Designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students.
History:
Our Family Center had applied for the 21st Century grant for four years before it was awarded to us.  Many intense hours of collaborating went into writing this grant by family center staff, school district staff, local community organizations and community members committed to our district’s children.  In July of 2004 the NAFSC received notice that the hard work had reaped its benefits.  We had been awarded our 21st Century Grant.

    Goals:
Two goals that every grant recipient must work towards are:
  1. To maintain or improve school attendance
  2. To increase academic achievement.
In addition, we are using our grant monies to work towards the goals of:
  1. Contributing to positive youth development through skill development in art, music, athletics and other enrichment opportunities
  2. Increasing the percentage of participating students that meet or exceed local academic achievement standards in reading or math
  3. Increasing the availability of and participation in programs that offer a range of high quality educational, developmental and recreational activities.
